Is the Lottery Worth It?

The lottery is a form of gambling in which people buy tickets for a chance to win a prize based on random chance. Some people spend a lot of money on these tickets, and others are willing to spend much less, believing that the small chance of winning might help them out of a tight spot. In addition, states promote lotteries as a way to raise funds for state budgets. But is it worth it?

Jackson uses a lot of symbolism in this story. In the beginning, she writes “The children assembled first, of course” (Jackson 1). This shows that the children have always been in the forefront of this tradition, and that it is just a normal part of the small town’s life. She then continues to build the idea that this is just a regular event, similar to square dances or teen club meetings.

The lottery is a huge part of American culture. People spend billions of dollars on these tickets each year, and the money is used for everything from subsidized housing units to kindergarten placements. It’s also a popular source of revenue for governments, which can use it to reduce their taxes.
